STOCK 3.8 ECU WILL SOON READ BOOST

Savvy Gen enthusiasts know that the OEM ECU on Genesis Coupe 3.8 can only read up to ~3 PSI of boost with the stock manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. That may be enough for natural aspiration, but it’s incompatible with a turbo kit, which pushes boost pressure of 6+ PSI. Using that MAP sensor under boost would make the engine receive too much air, and not enough fuel—the dreaded “running lean” scenario that can be so dangerous for motors.

So, how does the 3.8T run boost anyhow? Since 2019: creative tuning from AlphaSpeed works around the MAP/ECU limitation by tuning an “open loop” mode, which is engaged when the throttle is >50% pressed. In open loop mode, the ECU is no longer using the MAP sensor and is instead using values programmed by the tune. This is what Genesis Coupe 3.8 turbo kits rely on to run boost pressure beyond the capabilities of the stock ECU. While this method works well, it doesn’t allow customers to use partial boost or enter boost at < 50% throttle. These aren’t a big deal for drivers, but more control is always welcome.

What’s New in 2021

Coming soon, new R&D from AlphaSpeed will allow the OEM ECUs of the Genesis Coupe 3.8 to use the MAP sensors from the Genesis Coupe 2.0T. These sensors read 21-28 PSI, depending on the model year. This will allow the Genesis Coupe 3.8, both BK1 and BK2, to natively manage their own air/fuel ratio (AFR) under boost and at any throttle position. The new tuning breakthrough promises to be more convenient for drivers; even safer for 3.8T engines; and easier for tuners alike.

The tunes are not yet available, but interested customers can keep up with the news at AlphaSpeedPR.

Here’s How it Works

  1. BK2 3.8 customers will use MAP sensors from the BK2 2.0T.

  2. BK1 3.8 customers will use MAP sensors from the BK1 2.0T.

  3. Customers will need a new tune to use the new sensor instead of open loop mode.

  4. Customers will need an adapter plate to fit the 2.0T sensor onto the 3.8 intake manifolds.

  5. Wait patiently for the new tune to be available. Stay up to date on the AlphaSpeedPR website.
