UNLOCKED AT LAST: STOCK GC 3.8 ECU CAN READ & CONTROL BOOST

R&D on the Genesis Coupe is moving faster than ever, and AlphaSpeed and Remnant Performance have announced a moment 11 years in the making: boosted 3.8 customers can now tune for full ECU control of the air/fuel ratios (AFR) on the Genesis Coupe.

Putting the stock ECU control of mixing air and fuel, even with a big turbo, unleashes a new era for performance and safety on 3.8 Turbo configurations.

Computerized control of AFR has many benefits:

  • The engine can automatically compensate for the turbo’s additional airflow, enhancing safety in unpredictable driving scenarios

  • Users can drive at partial boost (less than max PSI), eliminating the driver restriction that customers drive at no boost or full throttle

  • Users can now increase boost via boost controllers, without needing a re-tune, as the engine can now adjust fuel flow to compensate

  • The engine can automatically compensate for sudden throttle cuts, enhancing safety

  • Users no longer need a third-party ECU (e.g. MoTeC or Haltech), which were used chiefly to unlock the computerized AFR that we now have from the stock ECU

This is a major departure from the previous tuning scene where the ECU was programmed to utilize an “open loop” mode. Open loop was activated by the driver exceeding 50% throttle position, and the ECU would read from a pre-programmed table of air/fuel ratios for the boost PSI chosen by the customer at the time of tuning. If the driver suddenly cut throttle or used less than max PSI, the engine was in grave danger of running lean. If the driver wanted to increase boost PSI with a stiffer wastegate spring or boost controller, the driver had to undertake a full re-tune. While these limitations were easily managed in day-to-day driving of a 3.8T, they were a nuisance that the Gen community has waited 11 years to overcome.

Now the stock Genesis Coupe ECU can do it all, and taking advantage of the setup couldn’t be easier:

  1. Buy a Delphi PS10152 MAP sensor.

  2. Buy the Remnant Performance 2.0T MAP Sensor Adapter to fit your new Delphi sensor.

  3. Contact AlphaSpeed to arrange a tune or re-tune. The fee for ECU MAP capability is $100, on top of other costs for your setup.

  4. WARNING: Do not install your adapter and sensor until you are at your tuner, ready to tune. You will not be able to drive your car if you’ve installed the new sensor if the tuner has not yet flashed the ECU with the proper software support.
